WYPR Strengthens Central Maryland Coverage with MaxxCasting
Baltimore Public Media’s WYPR 88.1 FM has partnered with GeoBroadcast Solutions (GBS) to enhance its signal across central Maryland using MaxxCasting™ technology. The first phase of the project links WYPR in Baltimore with WYPF in Frederick, both on 88.1 FM, to deliver clearer, more reliable coverage throughout the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., regions.
“Working with GBS allows us to expand WYPR’s ability to serve our communities with reliable, high-quality public radio,” said Craig Swagler, WYPR President and General Manager. “This investment ensures that our listeners, whether they’re in Baltimore, Frederick or across central Maryland, can depend on us for trusted journalism and engaging programming every day.”
GBS CTO Paul Littleton collaborated closely with WYPR Chief Engineer Ray Hepner to optimize MaxxCasting for the station’s diverse terrain. The system uses a network of low-power, synchronized booster sites to eliminate coverage gaps and improve audio consistency for listeners.
With phase two on the horizon, WYPR is poised for even greater enhancements, the opportunity to explore ZoneCasting™, GBS’s breakthrough technology that enables broadcasters to tailor content to individual communities in real time.
"Public radio is about connecting communities, and MaxxCasting makes that connection stronger," said a GBS spokesperson. “Listeners across Baltimore and Frederick will hear the difference.”
MaxxCasting helps FM broadcasters strengthen signal quality, expand usable coverage, and deliver a more reliable listening experience across complex regions.
