KQED Boosts East Bay Coverage with MaxxCasting Technology

KQED-FM, the NPR Member station serving the San Francisco Bay Area, has partnered with GeoBroadcast Solutions (GBS) to address long-standing FM signal challenges in East Bay communities such as Concord and Walnut Creek. Despite its powerful 110,000-watt Class B signal from San Bruno Mountain, the region’s hilly terrain has caused reception issues. To resolve this, KQED has implemented the MaxxCasting system, using four strategically placed nodes and FM boosters, including in Benicia, Concord, Alamo, and Orinda, to enhance signal reliability and consistency.

This initiative aligns with FCC rules for public broadcasting and aims to ensure better access to KQED’s programming in densely populated, topographically challenging areas. GBS CTO John Paul Littleton emphasized that the solution was customized to meet the Bay Area’s specific signal needs while complying with regulatory standards.
